National Drinking Straw Day
NATIONAL DRINKING STRAW DAY
National Drinking Straw Day 2020 |
when it is celebrated ?
National Drinking Straw Day is celebrated every year on
January 3 in memory of Marvin C. Stone who received the patent of paper
drinking straws on January 3 in 1888. The straws man ever used were made by the
Sumerians, and were probably most often used for drinking beer, which at that
time contained many solid byproducts of the fermentation process. Thousands of
years later, in the 1800s, the rye grass straw became popular because it was
cheap and soft. Unfortunately, it also tended to turn to mush in liquid.
Today, manufacturers make a variety of reusable
straws. From stainless steel and glass to bamboo and silicone, they not
only save money and the environment, but they are also fun to use. They
come in a variety of creative shapes and colors.
How to celebrate ?
National Drinking Straw Day |
Celebrating the National Straw Day means doing a lot of fun
things. A few of them can be to pay the whole day drinking all liquids via
straws—your morning fruit crush, afternoon drinking water, your evening wine and
on and on. One thing to watch out for here, however, is the fact that sucking
any liquid into your mouth via a straw heats the liquid by a few degrees, and
that's why hot drinks, such as coffee or tea, should not be drunk using straws,
as that could lead to scalding in your mouth.
Another good way to celebrate this vacation would be to find
out to create the drink that impressed Marvin Stone to make a replacement
reasonably straw within the initial place: the mint julep. Then, sit back,
sipping your drink through a straw and be grateful it does not taste like
rye grass!
One of the most popular drinks prepared on particularly this
day of the year is Mint Julep. Some of the essential ingredients that go into
its making are listed below:
·
Mint sprigs
·
Simple syrup/ sugar cubes/ sugar powder
·
Your favorite bourbon whiskey
A simple procedure is followed to create this refreshing
cocktail. To prepare one, Place half of the mint and simple syrup or sugar into
one special julep cup, or double old-fashioned glass, and the other half of the
mint and sugar/syrup into another. Muddle the mint well with a spoon to
dissolve the sugar and to release the oil and aroma of the mint. Pour half of
the bourbon into one glass, and the rest into the other. Then, fill both
glasses with crushed ice and stir quite energetically, until the glass becomes
frosty. Garnish with the mint sprigs.

However, the celebration must be environment-friendly as the
plastic ultimately ends up in oceans and drastically worsen the aquatic as well
as land-based life forms throughout the year as plastic takes years to vanish
and mix with the soil. Thus, for the celebrations of the National Drinking Straw
day and also for the usage of these straws throughout the year, some of the countries
have issued stringent laws against the usage of plastic straws. Countries like
Brazil, the European Union, the United States of America, the United Kingdom
and Canada are some of the countries which have come one step forward in
maintaining the beauty of a tradition and simultaneously taking care of mother
earth.
The National Straw Day is celebrated and enjoyed by people of
all ages be it old people with saggy and cute smiles, the middle-aged corporate
bourgeois and most significantly the kids, who enjoy the most getting
themselves involved in the fun activities that happen at many public parks,
schools, and shopping malls.
