The earliest known fruitcake recipe is from ancient
Rome. In this recipe, fruitcakes were made using pomegranate seeds, pine nuts,
and raisins that were then mixed with barley. In the middle ages, honey,
spices, and preserved fruits were added.
Recipes varied from country to country. Depending upon
the taste liked by people and even the availability of ingredients. In the 16th
century, when Americans discovered that sugar can be used as a preservative.
Then they used this combination to make slices of bread and then fruit cake.
This product became very popular among the people and it was very affordable.
But later due to very excessive sweetness content in the cake made people turn
away from fruitcakes. But then also giving fruitcakes as presents remained a
tradition in many countries.
